Painting in Adobe Photoshop CS5: Step-by-Step

Click to watch preview segment

I've put together a quick video demonstrating the key steps of interpreting a photograph into a finished painting using Adobe® Photoshop® CS5. My goal here is to take Photoshop beyond simple so-called smudge painting and utilize it as a full-blown painting medium. The photograph is simply a guide underpainting upon which I apply my own expressive embellishments.

Adobe Creative Suite 5 will be previewed on April 12th.

Painting in Adobe Photoshop CS5

Unless you live under arock, you are probably aware that Adobe has been working on an update to its Creative Suite products. In fact, Adobe last week pre-announced Creative Suite CS5, which will be previewed on April 12th.

I am involved with the Photoshop Prerelease Program and now have the OK to show what I've been up to. I can't provide specific details of CS5 features, but needless to say, I've been painting with it. I will be posting my recent work here in the coming weeks. I am also in the initial stages of authoring a Photoshop CS5 title with lynda.com that will specifically cover painting.

Stay tuned for more paintings!

I am pleased to announce that I will be assisting the wild & crazy Russell Brown for his Virtual Photoshop Worlds: Creating Avatar Masks 2-day event at the How Design Conference in Denver, CO this coming June 5th & 6th.

This inspirational event is designed for graphic designers, art directors, and creative directors looking for creative new ways to use Adobe Photoshop in their projects. Photographers might enjoy this event as well and should definitely consider taking this class. Take note, this is not a good class for a beginning user of Photoshop. This class will be focused on advanced painting techniques found in the latest version of Photoshop. If learning how to use all the new creative brushes, textures and presets in Adobe Photoshop sounds interesting, then this is the class for you!

For more information and registration details, visit the Virtual Photoshop Worlds webpage.

See you there!

Project Gustav: Immersive Digital Painting

This week, Microsoft Research is demonstrating Project Gustav, a realistic painting-system prototype, at TechFest 2010. Gustav takes advantage of recent processor performance improvements on the current generation of available computers.

With improved processor handling, it is now becoming possible to model the geometry of the brush, as well as the physics of the paint medium. The results are impressive.
